Like many good Canadians of Italian heritage, during our frequent visits to the land of our grandparents, we found ourselves stuffing our suitcases full of the products that we just couldn’t find back home. Very often, similar products were available at our grocery stores or local market… but they just weren’t the same. It didn’t take us long to figure out that whether your family was from Calabria, Sicilia, Puglia or Lombardia, for some reason Italians kept the best of what they make for themselves and exported products specially produced for just that – exportation.
But, it isn’t a conspiracy against the rest of the world. It’s just that usually the best of what Italy has to offer (and there is a lot!) is made by small, independent, family run producers that for logistical, cultural or language reasons find exportation not feasible. Having the benefit of living on both sides of the water, we have decided to use our access to our two favorite countries to help introduce the real “Best of Italy” to Canada. And for us, the best of Italy is pure extra virgin olive oil.
And thus… The Olive Oil Merchant was born.

I read your article in Kelowna’s ” Capital news” and it piqued my interest ! I use Extra Virgin Olive Oil but your product sounds like it would be a superior quality to store bought. Could you tell me what your price would be on a 500 L. bottle ?( Interested in a Med. or Light varirty for salads & cooking) Thanks ! H.Lalonde

Our oils are different from what you would generally find in a supermarket because they are artisan products, 100% Italian with a best-before date for guaranteed freshness. For a 500ml bottle prices start at about $15.50. In the “delicate” category I would recommend either the Bonamini DOP from Veneto or the Oliveto DOP from Umbria. Medium oil recommendations would be Vantera from Campania or Geraci from Sicily. All available in the 500ml size. For cooking I would suggest the Longazeria from Veneto that comes in a 1L bottle.
